Lovely Views of Polruan, Fowey and the Fowey River, Cornwall

I often seem to take photos of the Fowey River, looking across from the town of Fowey, so I thought a few pics from the Polruan side of the river would be in order.

Below is the Fowey River with various boats accumulating between Fowey Town and Polruan.

On the Polruan side of the river is the boatyard of C. Toms & Son which can be seen in the next two photos.
A ferry on the river.

Once arriving at Polruan there is the welcoming Lugger Inn.

If you walk up to the top of the hill in the village, there are lovely views -  see my post Polruan, Cornwall : Coastal Views, Chapel Ruins And A Castle

Now though we are looking across from Polruan to Fowey ...

... and another similar view.

Below is where Pont Pill Creek joins the Fowey River.

Here we are at Pont Pill itself - two photos.

From Pont Pill there is an uphill path with wonderful views of the River Fowey. This is part of one of my favourite walks, see my post The Magical Hall Walk at Fowey Cornwall - With Lots of Photos

Now back in Fowey Town - see The Lovely Riverside Town of Fowey, Cornwall, 21 Photos.

Moving on to other things - three photos of the trees on the opposite side of the road to our house.

It's interesting to see the changing of the trees throughout the year. Lots of leaves on the loose at this time of year

I had to visit St. Austell station and from the bridge there was a good view of the church tower and the countryside beyond.

A small train trundled into the station

Just in case you were thinking of dozing off here's a splash of colour seen in St. Austell town ...

... and some more fishy artwork

So that's another week gone, time does seem to fly by at times. What made me think of this was my grandson. He had to interview someone for a school project and he chose me. So we dug out lots old photos and stuff I've kept over the years. This included the picture of me from when I was 14 or 15 - as below.

Where have the years gone? So many memories. Enjoy your week, hope it's filled with happy days. Good wishes ~ Mike.

Walking Through Fowey, Cornwall.

The weather wasn't great but we poodled down to Fowey for a short walk, always an interesting town to visit.

We parked the car in Gallant's Drive - safe to do so this time of year - and wandered down the Esplanade.

The first view is across the Fowey River to Polruan

The river gently splashes the rocks below.

Now looking inland as the river meanders through the hills.

Another view across the river to Polruan. There is a ferry from Fowey to Polruan and vice versa.

We continued walking to the quay passing by the Fowey Aquarium.

On the quay the canons are at the ready - just in case they are needed!

We walked on through the town looking at the views when possible.

Another small quay. It appears that Queen Victoria and Prince Albert stopped off here for a cuppa back in 1846.

Next is a building I like: The Georgian Scallop Shell House. It has an interesting history.

The story goes that there was previously a medieval house here. This was used by pilgrims on their way to the Shrine of St. James of Compostela in Spain. Records reveal that between 1412 and 1456 licences were granted to seven Fowey Shippers, who carried around 350 Pilgrims to Spain.

Going up Customs House Hill and the narrow road beyond.

Fortunately the road has one way traffic only.

Peeking across the river, with the lifeboat in position

Further along the river is the Bodinnick Ferry for cars, vans and foot passengers.

A pleasant house overlooking the river

Further along the river is the industrial sector, lots of china clay etc. have been exported from here over the years - see the 1904 photo at the end of this post.

Wandering back through the town there are various shops and food outlets.

Back to the main Fowey Quay and we succumbed to C0rnish pasties - mine a veggie option, being vegetarian.

We found an empty seat and a young seagull thought he would join us. He took a lot of persuading to go away - it seems he is addicted to pasties!

Lunch over we wandered slowly back to the Esplanade.

A final look across the river to Polruan and our car was waiting. A pleasant way to spend a morning.

That's it for today but there are more photos of Fowey on my blog post A Flavour Of the Old Town of Fowey, Cornwall With 24 Photos or, if you want a longer, proper walk I recommend The Magical Hall Walk at Fowey Cornwall.

P.S. I came across this old photo from 1904 of china clay being delivered to Fowey.

That's definitely the lot for today. All good wishes for the week ahead~ Mike.

The Lovely Riverside Town of Fowey, Cornwall, 21 Photos

Sometimes you see a house which seems to have a perfect setting, like the one above in Fowey.

What a view - overlooking the sea and the entrance to the Fowey River and also near to Polly's Leap and cove - which, perhaps, may not be so good.

There are varying stories, but someone called Polly is said to have thrown herself and her new born baby from the cliff after being jilted by her boyfriend.

We were walking along the Esplanade in Fowey towards the town.

We continued to the end of the Esplanade and turned right by the red post box

Though I did take a quick look at Fowey Church.

We meandered towards the quay passing the Aquarium - with an outside barometer. According to the info Admiral Robert Fitzroy produced this design back in 1857.

Two hundred of the barometers were placed around the coast. The barometer shown below is number 103 and was given to Fowey town on  the 21st of January, 1871.

On the quay is a Rook with a Book. This is to celebrate the author Daphne du Maurier who lived in Fowey.

One of her books, The Birds, was adapted for Alfred Hitchcock's classic film of the same name.

There were also some Spring flowers in boxes.

The Polruan Ferry came into view. This, as the name suggests, crosses the river from the village of Polruan to Fowey and vice versa.

We moved on to Fore Street but only walked as far as Mrs. Noahs, Instead we took a back street,  Bull Lane.

From here we could look down on the rooftops and ...

... a good view of the 16th century church tower.

We came across a quote from Wind in the Willows: "and you really live by the river? What a jolly life."

Some say that Pont Pill, a creek which joins the River Fowey, was  the inspiration for Kenneth Grahame's Mole, Ratty, Toad and Badger's adventures in his book The Wind in the Willows

Another view of the church.

We now start to go downhill via steps.

A few brightly coloured cottages show the way.

The photo below is looking back to where we had walked.

And bob's your uncle, we are next to the church once more - along with some Spring flowers. The 14th century church, is dedicated to St. Finbarr

So it's back to the Esplanade to retrace our steps. A couple of photos of the cottages.

The Fowey River is to the left and if you take a sneaky peek through a window, when no one is looking of course, you'll see the river.

And finally for today looking across the river to Polruan.

Fowey Car Parking:
The car parks in Fowey can be quite expensive, but at this time of year (October to April) I park roadside where there is a single yellow line. See sign below which verifies this is okay. Always double check the signs though.

Thanks for visiting my blog:
